West Africa: It’s Nice to be Nice
We started off in Dakar, Senegal. Travelling by public transport towards Freetown, our roadtrip took us right through the Gambia, ‘The Smiling Coast’ of Africa. Why go around it when you can go through it?
Capital: Banjul | Language: English, Mandinka, Wolof, indigenous | Currency: Dalasi | Religion: Islam, Christian | Population: 2 million
The Gambia is the smallest country on the African continent. This friendly little sliver of a nation calls itself ‘The Smiling Coast’ with good reason. It’s easy to get around, safe (even though we managed to arrive on the eve of a possible coup) and comfortable, and the people really are friendly. If you are heading south from Senegal you can go around The Gambia – by land or by water – but why not go straight through it? It’s also a handy spot to pick up visas for onward travel.
