What’s not to love about travelling in Egypt?? Bravely dodging traffic to explore Cairo ‘The City of 1,000 Minarets’. Drifting on the Nile aboard a felucca at sunrise, sunset, and any time in between. Speeding through the desert on one minibus after another, slowing down only when camels cross the road. Smoking shisha and drinking tea at chilled out riverbank cafes. There’s so much more to Egypt than beach resorts or group tours to the pyramids.
This post is a trip report. It’s the itinerary we made for the eighteen days we spent in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, plus a bit of other info about how we got there in the first place, our route, traveling around, and lessons learned along the way.
A couple of locals we talked to in Cairo and Alexandria hinted at there being ferries to Saudi Arabia from Hurghada or other places in Egypt, but no one knew much about it. Any sort of ticketing or travel agent we asked said no such thing existed and tried to sell us flights to Riyadh. That only strengthened our resolve and we were determined, Insh’Allah, to arrive in Saudi Arabia by ferry.
We set off with one-way tickets to Cairo. We didn’t have an itinerary – just the idea that we’d head south and try to make it to Cape Town. And we did. Here are some of the highlights from a trip down the length of a continent.
Our visas came earlier than expected and after a very long day of travel we made it from Egypt to Sudan. Plus, we learned a few things about traveling in Sudan, on the way.
