In 1822 the American Colonization Society starting returning freed slaves to Africa, establishing Liberia as a sort of American colony and new country in the process. It’s a tiny country you can crisscross on red dirt roads through vibrant green fields and palm forests, past banana plantations and colourful villages, and land on a nearly endless strip of golden beach.
