Hi, good - thanks! Yes, it's quite the journey, hope you can work it out. The bathrooms are separated, and honestly quite fine...although water in the sinks would have been handy for toothbrushing at least:)

I enjoyed reading this story. Very hilarious, the 'drunk teacher' made me laugh out loud. I have been considering taking this train journey from Kapiri to Dar as soon as I find a travel companion. I was wondering if the first class have their own bathrooms from the rest though.....I cant imagine the state without water!

Hi, happy to hear you enjoyed the story! I think you're right about improving along the way - and cross-border service is resuming so that's a start right there. Thanks a lot for this info about picking up the train from near Morogoro without having to go all the way to Dar, very useful to hear from one who lives there:)

I enjoyed reading your story and comments from other readers. Its a good and informative story. Sometimes somewhere in your story I felt shame to my country especially the chaos of lacking water in the toilet and clear guideline on how to book a ticket and other related issues. I believe we shall keep on improving as we are moving on.
There were a reply you made that one can not travel with TAZARA train right away from Morogoro town. I am residing Morogoro municipality, if you want to take TAZARA you must take a bus to either KISAKI or MANG'ULA train station where you book ticket and wait for the train from DAR ES SALAAM. Not necessarily to travel to DAR ES SALAAM.
Thank you for sharing your adventure!!!!!

You're most welcome, it was too good not to share:) Definitely it is quite an experience - I wonder what differences you'll find when you do it again, so many years later? Good luck with your upcoming adventures and enjoy!

Wanted to thank you for sharing this amazing story. I am planning to take TAZARA train from Dar es Salaam to Kapiri Mposhi next month. I was made the some journey as an late Congolese teenager boy with his 3 buddies running away from war and chaos in the DRC. Fast forward 26 years late as a professional who spent the majority of his time in USA and Canada. I cant wait for the adventure. I learn a lot from your article as I prepare this epic adventure. I am African still and always, still I could not stop laughing loud about the typical truth and laughable stereotypes about my people: from white (or black :)) lies, to the drunk teacher, to African times ... Superb!!! Great story to share! Sharing is Caring :)
I am planning to write my adventures that will take me to almost 2 month of travelling form North America to Qatar to the motherland.

I thoroughly enjoyed this article, it made me laugh heartily. I spent a few months in Tanzania but never considered travelling by train. I can't say this has really sold me on the idea, but you did perfectly capture Tanzanian time, the quirks of their bureaucracy and the magic of culturally immersive slow travel.

TAZARA does not go through Morogoro. The new Standard Gauge Railroad (SGR) does. TAZARA passes south of the Uluguru Mountains and Morogoro is north of them. You;d have to take SGR from Morogoro to Dar to pcik up the TAZARA
